Top jobs in Columbia ' And how to land one

By Remington College Posted March 12,2019

With unemployment at a low and job growth on the rise across the country, employment opportunities are everywhere. South Carolina and its capital city, Columbia, are no exception.

Throughout South Carolina as of October 2018, unemployment is at a record low of 3.3 percent. At the same time, the state continued to add jobs, with 37,800 seasonally adjusted positions in the last year.

What does this mean for you? Opportunity! With the help of a career training program at a trade school, you can find a great position.1

Here are some of the growing fields in South Carolina:

In early 2018, healthcare became the U.S.'s largest employer. As the population of the country ages, more positions in this industry open. That means jobs, from patient care to administrative roles, need to be filled.

A difficulty in many states, including South Carolina, is a lack of skilled workers. Opportunities are out there, but companies struggle to find workers with the right skills to do the job. This could be especially problematic in the Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry, which is one of the largest and fastest growing in the state.

Tourism is continuing to grow throughout the state of South Carolina. Generating at least $21.2 billion annually and supporting one in every 10 jobs in the state, it's a backbone in the state's economy. Tourism spending is breaking records in South Carolina, with increases in major tourist destinations as well as rural areas.

South Carolina has always been a leader in the manufacturing industry thanks to its mild climate, location and ideal ecosystem. The state is home to many types of manufacturers including aerospace, energy, automotive and biotechnology manufacturers. Recently, companies MAHLE Behr and Sundaram-Clayton Limited (SCL) have announced expansions, bringing hundreds of jobs to South Carolina.

Ready to break into one of these hot industries? Remington College Columbia Campus offers a number of diploma programs in the trade and medical industries.

If you're interested in trade and manufacturing, Remington College Columbia Campus offers both a computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and heating, ventilation and air conditioning diploma program. The CADD training program combines creativity with precision to help prepare students to design buildings, mechanical devices, electrical systems and more by learning AutoCAD software.

HVAC students will take classes that cover ventilation and refrigeration systems, air conditioning systems, domestic appliances and more to prepare them for a number of entry-level positions in the skilled labor market.1

Those interested in taking advantage of the growing medical field also have options at Remington College Columbia Campus through the medical assisting, medical office administration, medical billing and coding and pharmacy technician diploma programs.

Both the medical office administration and medical billing and coding training programs help prepare students to help patients behind the scenes in the healthcare industry.

Those interested in working with patients directly can also train for career opportunities with the medical assisting and pharmacy technician diploma programs. The medical assistant program is meant to train students in medical office fundamentals and basic uses of equipment. The pharmacy tech program also gives students hands-on experience in the basic elements of the pharmacy field.

Armed with the proper education and skill sets, a successful career in one of Columbia's top industries is a possibility for you.1 Check out our programs at Remington College Columbia Campus to learn more.
